Absence of Universal Genes

Absence of Universal Genes

In this video, Richard refers to an article about research that has been done in the comparison of DNA between a large number of species. The pecentage of DNA that is universal across all species is extremely small, which is inconsistent with the idea of a common ancestry. For the bulk of DNA, nearly a quarter is unique to each individual species, while the rest, whilst neither unique nor universal, is consistent with the idea of common design features. We are told the God created everything according to its kind.

Some Thoughts on Christian Education

In this video and article, Richard talks about Christian education and the importance of it being based upon a solid foundation that will stand up to the pressures imposed upon it by the culture of our society.

Devils Tower

This video and the associated article talk about Devils Tower, a well known geological feature in Wyoming. Richard talks about how the lack of erosion on the cliff faces is not consitent with a long age world history and also how the formation of such a feature (an isolated rock mound on an otherwise flat landscape) is best explained in terms of a worldwide flood.

Divine Evil?

Divine Evil?

In this video, Richard introduces a short article of his own, which addresses one of the most common objections to faith, namely that of why God allows suffering. Whilst we can provide some answers to questions about such things, we cannot always fully understand everything. God's challenge to us, as it was to Job, has got to be one of "will you trust Me?". There is plenty of evidence for the goodness of God and we need to trust in Him, even when the going is difficult and the way is not clear.

Genetic Complexity

Genetic Complexity

This video makes reference to a detailed series of five articles on the tRNA subsystem, which is part of the mechanism within a cell by which DNA patterns are translated into the blueprint for manufacturing protein molecules. The point to note that this is in itself a highly complex process and yet forms only a small part of the cell's overall system. Looking at the amazing complexity of the cell and the way that it operates so incredibly well, we can only reasonably conclude that it has to be the work of an intelligent designer. Also it should be noted that for the cell to continue to operate in a fully functional manner, random genetic mistakes could only be tolerated over a relative short time span (i.e. thousands as opposed to millions of years).

Attention and Truth

Attention and Truth

In this video, Richard makes reference to an article of his own that forms part of his study for his Masters degree in philosophy. It may make heavy reading for some, but the following two points come out in the video:-

  1. The search for truth needs to based on the objective and not the subjective. As Christians, our search for truth is firmly based on the premise that God exists and is alive.
  2. In our modern culture we often see a low attention span amongst peope, and yet when studying to find the truth, we need to be disciplined in paying constant attention to what we are doing.

Log Mats

Log Mats

In this video, Richard introduces an article by Michael Oard on the subject of log mats. A log mat is a phenomenon that can occur as result of a major catastrophe (e.g. the eruption of Mount St Helens in 1980) in which a large number of trees are uprooted and moved to form a large floating 'mat' on water. This is something that could have easily happened during a global flood, and as such, offers a good explanation to a number of findings that occur within sedimetary rock layers.

But God ...

But God ...

In the associated article, Richard cites a number of New Testaments references that use the phrase "but God..." and which go on to demonstrate that God is able to do the impossible. Based on the premise that God is indeed able to do the impossible, we are faced with a major question, namely that of: "Is God able to change the hearts of people in the West?". This question comes with a great challenge. We are living today in a culture that is increasingly secularised and anti-God, and yet in the various areas of apologetics (e.g. modern miracles, fulfilled prophecy and creation science) we are now in possession of a vast amount of evidence that was not avaiable even 40 years ago.

Response to ‘Weird Earth’

Weird Earth

In this video and article, Richard makes a response to the book 'Weird Earth' by Donald Prothero. This book looks at a number of subjects including creation science. Whilst the author does not take a favourable view of the latter, he does nevertheless make some attempt to engage with the subject when presenting his critique. In the associated article, Richard goes through each of Prothero's objections and presents a link to an article on the particular subject from one of the major creation societies.

Persuasion

Persuasion

Persuasion is something that we encounter a lot in life, namely where one person attempts to bring another round to his/her own way of thinking. In this video and article, Richard looks at the philosphical aspect of this, particularly in relation to evangelism. Two important points that come out are:

  1. In order to try and persuade someone, we need to be totally sure that what we believe is right and will stand up to scrutiny.
  2. It is important that we present all the facts so that people have the necessary information to come to their own conclusion.
